Polymer Clay Snowman
Are you having some fun playing around with Polymer Clay this holiday season? If you are looking for some cute ideas here is a festive little snowman and step by step directions to how we made him. Have fun and send us pics of your little holiday creations!
Step 1
Gather what you Need
- Polymer Clay
- Acrylic Paints
- Fabric for Scarf
- 2 tree sticks
- Polymer tools (razor, toothbrush, wood rod)
Step 2
Soften and shape Clay
Soften and shape Clay
- Take a handful of white Polymer Clay and start kneading it with your hands to soften it up a bit. You can do this in a couple small balls instead of one big ball to make it easier.
- Once softened start so shape the clay into balls for his body and head. You can make a two or three depending just on how you want your snowman to look. Both are cute.
- Also shape a couple buttons, a hat and a carrot.
Step 3
Form Snowman
Form Snowman
- Press the shapes together to form your snowman. We used a wooden craft stick to insert into the two snowballs to make sure his body was solid.
Step 4
Texture
Texture
- If you want your snowman to have a little texture like snow does, you can take a toothbrush and gently brush it back and forth over the snowballs. This will give it a lightly textured look like snow. It's ok to leave it totally smooth if you like it smooth too. This one above is textured.
Step 5
Make holes for arms, eyes and buttons.
Make holes for arms, eyes and buttons.
- Take your wood rod and push in holes for your snowman's eyes and where you want the sticks to go for his arms. Next poke little holes to make cute little realistic buttons.
Bake Him!
- Now that you have your snowman put together, it's time to bake him.
- Sculpey cooks best at about 275°F, for 10 — 25 minutes, depending on size, especially depending on thickness. Premo should bake at 275°F, for 30 minutes per quarter inch of thickness.
- Our snowman above is about three inches tall and 1 1/2 wide and we baked her at 275°F for a half hour on a cookie sheet.
Step 7
Let Cool then start Painting!
Let Cool then start Painting!
- After baking take it out and let cool for about twenty minutes to a half hour til cool to the touch.
- Once cooled, you can start painting it.
Note: We used all white polymer clay so we painted ours. You can also use different colored clays, so you can skip this part. - Paint the hat, nose, buttons and any little details you put on your snowman.
Step 8
Coat with Glossy Glaze
Coat with Glossy Glaze
- Paint a coat of Sculpey Glaze over the whole snowman or any parts you want to be glossy. If you prefer matte or satin, that is fine too.
Step 9
Glitterize!
While the glaze is wet, sprinkle a little glitter over your snowman. We used white on the body and pink and blue on the hat.
Step 10
Add his Arms
Stick in the little sticks in the holes on the side of his body that you made for his arms. You can glue them in but we didn't. That way if they break we can just put in another.
Step 11
Add a Scarf
You can take any fabric or ribbon and just make a little scarf to tie around your snowman's neck.
